It was an exciting Saturday for the 8th Grade Viking Volleyball teams as they played in a tournament at Midland Dow against some big Middle School teams in the area. The B team rolled through pool play by splitting 1-1 with Northeast MS, beating White Pine MS 2-0, and then winning out 2-0 against Western MS. This vaulted the Viking B team into first place heading into bracket play. In bracket play, the Lady Vikes beat Handy MS 2-1 before losing a thriller to Mt. Pleasant MS 1-2, which placed them third in the tournament. The Viking B team had tremendous serving from Jovie Trumble, Olivia Elisech, and Allison Allore all throughout the tournament. Emily Krantz was exceptional in the back row as Libero and it was great to see many of these girls experience their first Volleyball tournament. The Viking A team also found success in pool play by beating Northeast 2-0, splitting 1-1 with White Pine, and dominating Western 2-0. They also were the number 1 overall seed heading into bracket play. The Lady Vikes rolled through Handy in the first round 2-0. They then played Mt. Pleasant in the semi's which was closely contested, but the Viking A girls prevailed 2-0. This meant that the championship would be a rematch between two local middle schools- Swan Valley vs. White Pine. Exciting rally's, blocks, and kills illuminated the Dow gym throughout the skilled championship. However the Vikings lost 23-25, 23-25 to finish runner up in the tournament. The Viking A team was led by Brooke Felsing, Mya Massey, and Jaidyn Rethman at the net. The team showed exceptional serving, setting, and back row play led by the two captains- Lilly Swift and Kaydence Walsh. Huge thanks to Mrs. W for helping coach and to the parents for bringing snacks and energy when cheering!

The 8th Grade Lady Vikes Volleyball came out clicking on all cylinders yesterday against Cramer Middle School winning 3 sets to 0. Mya Massey led the way with 20 serving points and 8 aces as her power serve caused a minor earthquake throughout Shields. Jadyn Harltey and Katie McCloskey combined for 25 assists as the two girls were dropping dimes all night for the SV attackers. The Lady Vikes are back in action tomorrow away at their rival Freeland Falcons. Come out and support!
