Last Friday, 6th Grade students at Swan Valley Middle School participated in mock interviews. Each student used Xello- a career cruising website- to determine a job that they were interested in. Students were then placed in a career path that they desired for their interview. They practiced going through the interview process, dressing the part, and created resumes/cover letters for their desired jobs. The following were the Golden Applicant Winners(the student who the interviewer would hire in their field): Willow Imm, Cam Kornecky, Azalia Johnston, Liz McCollum, Vincent Procuro, Wesley Kemerer, Maci Wilson, Teegan Simmons, Kennedy Darabos, Addy Ball, Jaxson Graham, London Lake- Blohm, Ian Stajdl, and Mia Castillo. Thank you so much to our volunteer interviewers: Ali Brady(Law), Justin Stroebel(HVAC/ Auto), Shelly Foy(Education), Jen Boehler(Art and Cosmetology), Andy Schiefer(Animal Science), Jonathon Weidman(Software Engineering), Blake Briguglio(Health and Fitness), Lindsey Sullivan(Graphic Design), Jody Komathy(Finance), Kylee Monaha(Theater/Arts), Rafe Maxell(Police), Lynda Thayer( Agricultural and Natural Resources), and Linda Szafranski(Health Science). Go Vikings!

Seventh grader, Nick Bauer recently returned from the 64th Annual Quebec Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament in Quebec. Nick is a member of the 2011 Oakland Jr Grizzlies AAA Hockey Team. The tournament has a rigorous selection process and not all teams that apply received a bid to play. The tournament took place February 7th-18 and is held during Quebec's City's winter celebration. The tournament is the, most prestigious minor hockey tournament in the world. This year there were 18 countries represented and 120 teams total. Nick stayed with a local host family that spoke primarily French. He was immersed in the French-Canadian language and culture. The team did have some condensed French lessons from a team mom. Being a student-athlete, does present its own unique challenges. Nick not only has to face the mental and physical challenges of the game, but he has to keep up with school work to maintain his grade point avg. This experience challenged him to set priorities while being in a different country and away from some of his family as he prepared to travel along with during the tournament. This was a rewarding, unique experience with lifetime memories made.

Shout out to 7th grader Logun Abram, he earned his Black Belt in Taekwondo on Sunday Feb. 11, 2024. He had to run 2 miles in less than19 minutes, do 50 push-ups, climb a rope up and down twice, wall sits for 2 minutes, isometrics for 2 minutes. Spar 1 on 1, Pankration, and then Spar 2 Black Belts against him. He broke 4 adult boards with a flying side kick and broke 2 adult boards with a knife strike with his hand. He had to know multiple kicking, punching, and self defense techniques. He also had to memorize over 50 korean words, and the Taekwondo Creed. It was a grueling 5+ hour long test. Only Only 2% of students who start as a white belt, will become a Black Belt.
