The Optimist Club of Saginaw recently hosted its annual Youth Appreciation Luncheon, a special event dedicated to honoring young individuals who demonstrate exceptional optimism and contribute positively to their school and community. This year, the spotlight was on two outstanding students from Swan Valley Middle School—8th grader Ella Holnagel and 7th grader Connor Charboneau—who were recognized for their remarkable attitudes, leadership, and commitment to making their school a better place. Through this event, the club celebrates the values of optimism, integrity, and service that help young people grow into thoughtful and engaged citizens.

The 8th grade Viking Volleyball teams were back in action this week against Alma and Ithaca. Both teams were victorious in each game. The 8th grade B team remains undefeated thanks in part to Rylie Nachtweih's vicious serving. She had over 25 serving points combined in the two games. Vivienne Ardouin and Aeris Hickey were great all around and brought great leadership in both games. The 8th grade A team moved to 2-1 on the season. They were led by Nalini Nguyen's top spin serve. She had over 15 serving aces this week and passed/set with ease. Big thanks to the 8th grade A team parents who provided the 7th and 8th grade girls with a delicious Italian meal on Tuesday night! All of the SVMS Volleyball girls will travel to East Lansing tomorrow to watch MSU v Michigan! We are excited to see some high level college Volleyball! Both teams will be tested next week as they play Freeland and Bay City John Glenn! Come support!

The 7th Grade Volleyball teams continued their perfect season with a pair of commanding victories this week, remaining undefeated with a 3-0 record. Monday, Nov. 11 - Alma Panthers Both the 7th Grade B and A teams faced off against the Alma Panthers on Monday, and both squads walked away with 3-0 wins. The B Team started strong, winning all three sets: 25-17, 25-11, and 25-19. Grace Horny was the standout player, leading the team in serving with an impressive 13 points, including several aces. Piper Sova also contributed significantly with 5 points from the service line. At the net, Alayna Metiva, Aubrey Allore, and Kenley Townsend each had a kill. Meanwhile, Mia Castillo was solid in the back row, leading the team with digs and ensuring Alma had few chances to rally. The A Team was equally dominant, cruising to victories with set scores of 25-1, 23-3, and 25-16. Harper Wagner had a remarkable performance, serving 18 points in a row to kick off the 2nd set. Ryelle Thompson was also strong at the service line with 14 consecutive points, while McKenna Miller added 9. Maeva Sobol was instrumental in setting up the offense, leading the team in assists. At the net, Maci Wilson might be small but she is mighty and contributed 4 kills to keep the Panthers on their heels. Wednesday, Nov. 13 - Ithaca Yellowjackets On Wednesday, the Vikings traveled to Ithaca, and both teams kept their streaks intact with more convincing wins. The B Team once again swept their opponent with set scores of 25-15, 25-12, and 25-5. Grace Horny was on fire, racking up 26 serving points, 15 of which were aces. Piper Sova added 9 serving points over the course of three sets. Alayna Metiva, Aubrey Allore, and Emily Rocha contributed a kill each at the net, while the team's strong defensive play, led by Horny’s serving and Castillo’s digs, kept Ithaca on the defensive. The A Team matched the B team’s performance with a 3-0 sweep: 25-12, 25-13, and 25-10. Serving was again a key factor, with Addison Ball, Maggie Kennelly, and Ryelle Thompson stepping up to lead the charge. McKenna Miller had her best game of the season at the net, tallying 8 kills, while Harper Wagner added 5 kills. Ryelle Thompson led the offense with 10 assists, and together with Evelyn Miller and Wagner, they combined for 10 additional assists, setting up their teammates for success. Looking Ahead: The Vikings' undefeated streak will be put to the test next Monday as they face a tough challenge against the Freeland Falcons on the road. With both teams playing at such a high level, this upcoming matchup is sure to be an exciting one! Be sure to catch the action as these teams look to keep their perfect records intact. Go Vikings!
