The Swan Valley boys middle school track team wrapped up an outstanding season with an impressive performance at the MegaStar Track Meet last night, competing against many of the top athletes and largest schools in Michigan.

The 4x800 relay team of Powell, Anders, Kench, and Charboneau continued their incredible season by finishing as runners-up while lowering their own school record by another six seconds. Their time of 8:51.07 capped off a remarkable year for the relay squad.

Lucas Powell earned a 6th-place medal in the 400-meter dash, running a personal-best 54.64. With that performance, Lucas moved into second place on the all-time school record list.

Lucas Kench was impressive as always, running the 800-meter in 2:14. Lucas broke the school record with Charboneau at the regional track meet, and currently sits at #2 all time in school history.

Connor Charboneau turned in another historic night on the track. In the mile, Connor broke his own school record by seven seconds, running 4:40 to earn a 2nd-place finish. He later added a 6th-place medal in the 3200-meter run, shattering his previous school record by 26 seconds with a huge personal best.

In the field events, Wesley Kemerer capped off an outstanding season in pole vault as the school record holder, while Alex Pike and Evan Owens represented Swan Valley well in high jump. Both athletes finished the season ranked among the top five jumpers in school history.

Congratulations to all of our athletes on an incredible season filled with hard work, personal bests, school records, and championship performances. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to coach such outstanding student-athletes.

VIKING ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (WEEK of May 25th...)

Swan Valley Athletics is honoring 2 additional Middle School Viking Athletes of the Week from last week. Congratulations to Arianna Mantalvanos (MS Girls Track) and Wesley Kemerer (MS Boys Track) for earning this prestigious award!

Here is what their coaches had to say about them fulfilling one or more of the Viking Athletic Core Values:

"Arianna has been dedicated and not complained once during this track season. This was her first year and she wasn’t really sure what events she wanted to do. She was a trooper in whatever event she was in to help the team and really shined at the long jump pit! She stayed and cheered on her teammates even when she was finished with her event! I am very proud of her hard work and dedication this season!"

"Congratulations to Wesley Kemerer on being named Viking Athlete of the Week! Just a month ago, Wesley decided to give pole vault a try for the very first time. Since then, he has put in the work every day, steadily improving with each practice and competition. Last week, everything came together as Wesley captured the Regional Championship title and broke the school record in the process. Wesley’s success is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and willingness to take on a new challenge. His determination and commitment to getting better every day make him a great example of what it means to be a Viking. Congratulations, Wesley!"

Swan Valley Athletics is honoring 2 Middle School Viking Athletes of the Week from last week. Congratulations to Natalie Hoffman (MS Girls Track) and Eli Anders (MS Boys Track) for earning this prestigious award!

Here is what their coaches had to say about them fulfilling one or more of the Viking Athletic Core Values:

"Natalie has been excited to run track since day 1! She always strives to get better whether it be at hurdles or pole vault. She has stayed after practice multiple times to improve on these events and never complains with all the running and workouts that we do on a daily basis. She never gives up and I admire her for her hard work and dedication to this track team! Keep up the great work Natalie!"

"I would like to nominate Eli Anders for his outstanding work ethic, leadership, and athletic accomplishments. Eli works hard every day with a clear goal in mind and consistently puts in the effort needed to achieve it. Last week, Eli played a major role in helping his team win the Saginaw County Championship by placing 6th in the 800-meter run, 1st in the 4x400 relay, and 1st in the 4x800 relay, where his team also set a new meet record. Beyond his athletic success, Eli is always encouraging his teammates and brings a positive attitude to the team every day. Rubik’s Cubes are a blast to solve and are not nearly as hard as you might think. When they were invented in the 1970s, people often became so frustrated that they would peel the stickers off and rearrange them by hand. Today, however, solvers know that the cube can be solved by using algorithms — specific patterns of moves that help place pieces in the correct spots without messing up the rest of the cube.

Solving a Rubik’s Cube connects directly to math and problem-solving skills. Cubers must recognize patterns, think critically, follow step-by-step procedures, and learn from mistakes when a strategy does not work. Just like in math, solving the cube requires patience, logical thinking, and perseverance. Each turn is part of a larger plan, showing how breaking a difficult problem into smaller steps can lead to success.
