Sydney Kuhn (Girls Track)

As it has gotten warmer, the Swan Valley High School Girls Track and Field Team is moving towards being stronger, faster, and in some cases, throwing farther.  The Lady Vikings have had an exciting season so far.  Although they have a smaller team this season, the talent has only grown to a whole new potential.

Outstanding freshman, Sydney Kuhn, has not only shown how diverse she can be on the volleyball and basketball court this year, but how fast she can be on the track.  “Kuhn Dog,'' as everyone called her during her freshman volleyball season, has had an outstanding run so far.

She has broken a school record in the 400 Meter Dash and 300 Meter Hurdles and is ranked in the state for the 200 Meter Dash, 400 Meter Dash, and 300 Meter Hurdles. Despite being out on the injury reserve list in the early part of May, she is one of the most highly anticipated athletes for the state competition in June.  Sydney plans to be back for regional competition at Frankenmuth on May 20th.

Hannah Murphy has been soaring through the ranks for shot put.  Last season, the Senior qualified to compete in the State Finals in Zeeland and just missed out on the podium.  Just like in basketball in the Swan Valley Varsity Girls Basketball Team’s historic run to the Regional Finals this past season, Hannah continues to take on a leadership role on the track.  As she prepares for her final ride, there are many things to consider as she works towards her goal of placing in the top 8 in the state.  Nerves and college decisions for next year are factors that Hannah has to be able to tackle as she makes her postseason run.

The 2022 Girls Track and Field Season is just heating up and so is the pressure Hannah is feeling.  When asked, Hannah said that she feels nervous and a lot of pressure.  She is expected to compete at such a high level, attempting to improve from last year’s season.  The pressure isn't stopping her from making unbeatable throws though, having taken 1st in many of the meets and invites this season.

As her years of high school are drawing to a close, Hannah reflects on her opportunities while on the track.  Due to her sophomore season being canceled at the start of the Pandemic in 2020, she is making the most of every practice, lift, and meet. The name Hannah Murphy will certainly be remembered as her name sits tall on the record wall in the Swan Valley High School Gymnasium.  Future Vikings will get the chance to look up and remember who Hannah Murphy was and the impact she had.

The Swan Valley Varsity Girls Track and Field Team has had an outstanding run so far into the season.  The fast and mighty Vikings are set to compete in a few more meets before they enter regional and state competition.  Congratulations to all of the Viking senior athletes graduating this spring!  Best of luck to each and every one of you!
