In a recent internal audit of the facilities at Swan Valley High School, the age and functionality of the main gym scoreboards was one of its highest priorities.  The scoreboards were donated by Shields Community State Bank in the year 2000 and have served Swan Valley Athletics and the local community with many years of exciting and thrilling events, many coming down to the wire!  However, it was time for an upgrade, and with a limited budget, there was no better place to ask for help than the community itself, one of Swan Valley’s biggest supporters!

The new NEVCO scoreboards and message center in the high school main gym were installed over the summer on August 12th.  They will be first used starting in the 2021-2022 school year, primarily in the sports of volleyball, basketball, and wrestling.  The scoreboards will replace the old ones that were not only out of date but also difficult to repair due to their age.  Features of the new scoreboards include the ability to customize team names, operate by specific sport, and the convenience of splitting the scoreboards during an invitational or quad meet. The additional message center will allow Swan Valley Athletics to advertise and convey information to fans, including thanking the local businesses in the area for their support.

The purchase of the new NEVCO scoreboards and message center would not have been possible without a very generous grant through the “Frankenmuth Credit Union Foundation for Our Communities”.  Thomas Township Business Association, Coty’s Landing, Culvers of Saginaw, Fred Gray Financial, Leddy Electric, Saginaw Control & Engineering, and Shields Chiropractic, all chipped in and donated the amount for the cost of installation.  Michigan Driver School will help pay for a way to protect the new scoreboards and message center.

An essential component of Swan Valley’s mission of fully developing the student-athlete is providing and promoting opportunities to give back to the community.  The financial assistance from those businesses and organizations involved with the recent addition to the high school main gym, only reinforces the strong relationship Swan Valley School District has with the local community, one that the various Swan Valley Athletic Programs look to build on throughout the years with ongoing community service and promotion.

The interscholastic athletic program of the Swan Valley School District is a vital and integral part of the total education program.  Its purpose is to make positive contributions to the development of the participants, spectators, school, and community.  It is the goal of the interscholastic athletic program of the Swan Valley School District to foster the development of each student-athlete academically, emotionally, socially, and physically.  Every Swan Valley coach will do this by investing in relationships, fully committing to all Viking Programs, and extending the classroom to the field of play.
